BOSTON (AP) — The Pan-Mass Challenge handed over a record $72 million to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute on Sunday, moving the pioneering cross-state bicycle ride within sight of $1 billion raised.The summertime ride to the tip of Cape Cod is the largest single-event athletic fundraiser in the world, raising $972 million for cancer care since 1980. It is the largest single contributor to Dana-Farber and its Jimmy Fund.A total of 6,500 participants cycled up to 211 miles across the state for the 44th PMC in August.

Pakistan opens 3 new border crossings to deport Afghans in ongoing crackdown on migrants

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan on Monday opened three new border crossings to expedite the deportation of Afghans living in the country illegally, officials said. Nearly 300,000 Afghans have left Pakistan in recent weeks since authorities started arresting and deporting foreign nationals without papers after the Oct. 31 deadline for migrants without legal status to leave the country voluntarily.The expulsions mostly affect Afghans, who make up the majority of foreigners in Pakistan. It has drawn criticism from the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan as well as human rights organizations. The number of border crossings used to deport thousands of Afghans rose to five after the new facilities were opened in southwestern Baluchistan province, said Jan Achakzai, the caretaker provincial information minister. Dozens of migrants are missing after a boat capsized off Yemen, officials say

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — A migrant boat capsized off the coast of war-torn Yemen, leaving dozens of people, mostly from the Horn of Africa, missing, Yemeni officials said Monday.Khalid al-Subeihi, an official with the Yemeni coast guard in the coastal city of Mocha, said the boat with 75 migrants on board capsized Sunday.He told The Associated Press that 26 people survived but at least 49 others remain missing.Another coast guard official, Lt. Co. Family evacuated from home after fire in Scarborough

A family new to Canada needed to evacuate the home they are renting after a two-alarm house fire in Scarborough on Sunday evening.Emergency crews were called to a house near the intersection of Bellamy Road and Colonial Avenue, north of Kingston Road, around 10:45 p.m. for reports of a fire.Investigators believe the flames started in the basement of the home. One of the occupants tells CityNews he heard his dogs scratching at the basement door and when he opened the door he noticed the fire.Him and his family proceeded to go outside. He says the family is new to Canada and they were renting the property.Police confirmed the home was successfully evacuated. No injuries were reported.There is no word what caused the fire. The occupants say they did not hear a fire alarm.Roads were closed in the area for the investigation.

AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin Police said they are investigating a Sunday night shooting that left one adult dead in far north Austin. One adult was transported to the hospital, according to APD. Police said they responded to the shooting on Aspen Street near North Lamar Boulevard and Kramer Lane around 11:35 p.m.According to APD, no one was in custody in the shooting and no suspects were at large. APD said there was no danger to the public. APD said the shooting took place at a residence on the street.
